With Levon Aronian out, Fabiano Caruana is the top seed remaining in the FIDE World Cup, and he lived up to that billing in the Round of 16. Caruana scored a tidy 2-0 win over Julio Granda to move on to the quarterfinals, where he’ll face Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who won out over Boris Gelfand in rapid tiebreaks. Vladimir Kramnik and Gata Kamsky were also among the favorites who made it through to the next round without needing tiebreakers.
