It’s no secret that former World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov has been nearly as critical of FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov as he has of Russian President Vladimir Putin. But last week, Kasparov announced that he’s offering an alternative for the world’s chess governing body: himself. Kasparov actually introduced an entire team that he believes could help improve FIDE, starting with himself but also including notables like Rex Sinquefield, the builder of the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis and the namesake of the Sinquefield Cup. The team includes members from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East as well.
