The third round of the FIDE World Cup saw one major upset, as top seed Levon Aronian fell to Evgeny Tomashevsky. Aronian lost his first game with White and could only manage a draw in the second game of the series, ending his run. Many other favorites went through without resorting to tiebreaks, including American hopefuls Hikaru Nakamura and Gata Kamsky, along with the last World Championship challenger, Boris Gelfand.
