December FIDE rating list

Posted by on Nov 30, 2013 in Chess News & Events | 0 comments

FIDE logoMagnus Carlsen enters the month of December as a World Champion and world’s highest rated player for the first time. He also equalizes his own record of 2782 set in March and April 2013, after gaining 2 ELO points from the match with Anand.

Levon Aronian is the only player, besides Magnus, rated over 2800 ELO. With 79 points gap, he takes second position with 2803. Third position is for Vladimir Kramnik with 2793, but he is close to losing this position after the loss from Nakamura and the draws with Mamedov and Li Chao at the World Chess Team Championship. If he want to stay close to the 2800 mark, a solid performance at the upcoming London Classic 2013 is vital.

Players placed 4th to 9th have practically identical ratings. At 4th position is Nakamura with 2786 ELO, and at 9th we find the ex World Champion Viswanathan Anand with 2773 ELO. In the same group enter also Veselin Topalov, Alexander Grischuk, Fabiano Caruana, and Boris Gelfand. 10th position is for Candidates 2014 participant Peter Svidler with 2758 ELO.

This time the rating list suffers no inflation or deflation, the top 100 staying at average 2703 ELO, still lower than the November 2012 record.
